Berkeley Native Wins Prestigious Food Science Award

A Berkeley native is one of four scientists who were awarded this year's prestigious World Food Prize on Tuesday.
Berkeley-born Howarth Bouis -- along with colleagues Maria Andrade, Robert Mwanga and Jan Low -- worked together to develop an orange-fleshed sweet potato whose boosted vitamin and nutrient content have already helped save some 10 million people from starvation and malnutrition-related diseases.
The high-yielding new tuber helps to strengthen the human immune system and reduce Vitamin A deficiency -- a leading cause of preventable blindness.
Bouis is the founder of HarvestPlus at the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute. According to the Associated Press, his 25-year career in the biofortification field has encompassed iron- and zinc-fortified beans, rice, wheat and millet as well as other Vitamin-A-enriched produce. These crops have been widely tested in over forty countries thus far.
The quartet were announced as the 2016 WFP winners during a ceremony at the US State Department in Washington, DC, according to the Associated Press.
