A ramen speed-eating contest, a sake summit, a Studio Ghibli trivia quiz, virtual kimono try-ons, and lots of live music are part of J-Pop Summit 2017, the eighth annual extravaganza featuring cosplay, art, films, music, and other aspects of Japanese pop music and culture. Berkeley-based Takara Sake USA is among the sponsors.
Performers at this year's J-Pop Summit include enka star Misaki Iwasa, dance troupe Tokyo Gegegay, kendama duo Zoomadanke, chart-topping anime singer May'n, "kimo-cos" pop duo Yanakiku, and many more.
Events include celebrity meet-and-greets, a karaoke face-off, traditional tea-ceremony demonstrations, a cosplay masquerade, a drag contest, live painting demonstrations, autograph sessions, and more.
A travel pavilion will allow guests to enter a virtual "Japanimmersion" world, where they can "see" and "feel" Japan while meeting mascot characters from various cities.
Set for Sept. 9-10 at the Festival Pavilion in San Francisco's Fort Mason, the summit also features a vast array of ramen chefs, sake producers, and Japanese food-and-drink producers such as Kikkoman, Hirotako, Shige Sushi, Choya, and others.
Tickets range from $35 to $50.
