Best Thursday Lunch Special

Anula’s Café’s Salmon Curry

Lance Yamamoto

From now on, here’s where you should head for lunch on Thursdays for delicious salmon curry in downtown-almost-Chinatown: Anula’s Cafe. The proprietress-chef of the tiny and usually crowded cafe, Anula Edirisinche, works wonders with the dishes and spices of her homeland, Sri Lanka, but adds Caribbean influences that celebrate her husband’s culture. Your taste buds will forever thank you for stopping here, whether it’s for jerk chicken, rotis, sandwiches, or Sri Lankan patties. About the salmon curry: Creamy, perfectly spiced curry sauce drenches super-fresh salmon atop rice with sides of lentils and greens with potatoes. Add coconut roti for sopping. Anula’s specials are consistently excellent, but they go fast. But no matter, because the kale salad with avocado and mango and the heavily anchovied Caesar salad will satisfy café-goers, too, guaranteed.
