The West Coast Songwriters Competition

Though it’s been going 26 years, this entertaining night out is surprisingly little known to spectators, though West Coast Songwriters are regulars. The West Coast Songwriters Competition is held on the third Monday of the month at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, the beautiful Berkeley theater with one of the best sound systems in the Bay Area. For the entry fee of $7 in advance or $9 after 7 p.m., you can watch up to 20 original songs performed by a range of songwriters, including seasoned rockers, old-timer hobbyists, and tween prodigies. This is where Sara Bareilles got her start as a teenager, and many other performers have been signed on the strength of performances here. The difference between this and other open mic nights is “€œthe performers are standing in front of a panel of judges, some of who are Grammy Award winners,”€ says organizer Nomi Yah, a gold record holder.
