Best Handmade Book Collection
UC Berkeley may have the oldest and rarest books in town, but Mills College has the prettiest in the Elinor Raas Heller Rare Book Room. Mills' collection of handmade—or artists—books are verifiably gorgeous. Librarian Janice Braun has acquired a remarkable collection of these books, which are made by hand and are, in their own right, works of art. The collection's variety is enormous, ranging from books resembling a box of chocolates with poems inside to metallic etchings of the Brooklyn Bridge to exquisitely made pop-up books about climate change. You have to see the collection to understand just how many ways there are to conceptualize a book. Paper books may soon be a thing of the past, but Mills College celebrates the beautiful, vanishing art of making them. During semesters sessions, the Heller Rare Book Room is open to the public by appointment, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-7 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays; on school breaks, open hours are 1-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
