Best Happy Hour on a Rooftop Patio

Mad Oak

In just under three years, Mad Oak (borrowing its name from Madison and Oak streets) has grown into a prominent Oakland watering hole thanks to its vast rooftop patio and community focus. The neighborhood "bar n' yard"—where friendly and attentive bartenders mix up craft cocktails and pour perfect pints from 40 beers on tap—manages to strike a balance between spacious and intimate. The airy, two-story floor plan accommodates lively Tuesday trivia teams, local Warriors and A's fans (drawn in by televised games), and happy hour-goers breaking bread (or Burnt Ends BBQ) at beer garden-style picnic tables. Happy hour is 3-7 p.m. Monday-Friday ($1 off well drinks and 16 oz draft beers).

Best Samosas for Under a Dollar

Milan International

Looking for a memorable culinary experience for under a dollar? Head down to Milan International for the best samosas in town. With a firm shell, tender potato-and-pea filling, and just the right amount of spice, Milan's samosas are a bargain at just 50 cents for a small and 75 cents for a large. What's more, they're always fresh because they're made all day, every day, except Mondays. And if you need 2,000—heck, even 3,000—all the owner needs is a couple days' notice. A perk of visiting Milan is that you'll hear different Indian languages being spoken and can pick up fresh curry leaves, a giant bag of Indian tea, or the latest Bollywood DVD.
