Best Paleo Restaurant

Mission Heirloom

Restricted diets tend to be defined by what people can't eat, but at Mission Heirloom—the Bay Area's only dedicated Paleo restaurant—dining out feels like an indulgence. Completely gluten-free, and also friendly to vegans, vegetarians, and the lactose intolerant, this North Berkeley cafe and restaurant serves up inventive, grain-free takes on comfort food classics such as waffles and chicken pot pie. Avoiding nightshades or on an autoimmune protocol diet? There are options for you, too. Perhaps the most delicious things on the menu are in liquid form: Both the sipping bone broth and the bulletproof coffee (made with butter from grass-fed cows) are heaven in a cup. While the menu is a bit pricey, the tradeoff for being able to eat with abandon feels worth it.

Best Lecture in a Bar

Nerd Night East Bay, Club 21

A self-professed "infovore" and early presenter at Nerd Nite San Francisco's popular lectures-in-a-bar series, Rick Karnesky endeavored to bring a satellite event to Oakland in Nerd Night East Bay, hosted at Club 21. "My favorite part of the night is hearing someone say, 'I never thought I'd be interested in outer space property law, but that was great,'" said Karnesky, the night's co-boss. The East Bay has no shortage of experts in diverse topics. Nerd Nites feature local scientists, history buffs, and creators of all kinds. Past talks have covered everything from stink-bomb science (presented by local author Mary Roach) to drone-assisted volcano photography. Club 21's beer, cocktails, and fare from the GrilledCheezGuy keep the mood lighthearted and the presentations far from dry. Upcoming months take on ant science (June), and women in the Black Panthers (July). Be there and be square (if you're 21 or older) on the final Monday of the month where $8 in advance or $10 at the door gets you in at 8 p.m.

Best Grownup Train Ride

Niles Canyon Railway

When you feel the floor begin to wobble under your feet at a wine tasting, that's usually a sign that you've had enough. On the Niles Canyon Railway's wine tasting trains, however, it means you've just left the station. The tracks of the Niles Canyon Railway were first laid down in 1866 as part of the first transcontinental railroad. Nowadays, these tracks play host to a moving museum of lovingly restored trains from the golden era of passenger travel. On select weekends from June through October, the Niles Canyon Railway runs a wine train through a river canyon starting at the pre-Hollywood movie studio town of Niles. Certified wine professional Steve Ferree will guide you through a tasting of Livermore wines paired with hors d'oeuvres during the two-hour ride, which is $40 per person.
