Best Bike and Pedestrian Path

Bay Bridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Path

You've seen the newish Bay Bridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Path along the east span of the Bay Bridge, but have you been on it? It's worth a trip. Park by the Caltrans Bridge Yard building and walk or bike the 2.2 miles to Yerba Buena Island. While not exactly an optimal trail for an intimate, heart-to-heart conversation (the traffic along the bridge is noisy), it's a fun walk or bike ride to a pleasant vista point on the island. Stop for a picnic lunch at vista point or, if you're biking, continue around Treasure Island, enjoying the wineries and views of San Francisco. Walking along the bridge takes two hours round trip, but you can do the bike ride in 45 minutes.

Most Oakland Pride

Beast Oakland

In the ever-expanding world of Oakland T-shirts and hoodies, Beast Oakland has carved a roaring, swaggering niche from its tiny shop in the Laurel district. Designer Fernando "Rush" Santos, who got his start as a graffiti artist, has taken the iconic Port of Oakland cranes and turned them into growling dinosaur-like creatures stomping across the landscape. Since the shop opened in 2014, he has expanded to sell hats, sweatshirts, leggings, and other gear promoting Oakland pride. Most of the Beast Oakland merchandise is available online, but the real treat is visiting the MacArthur Boulevard shop where Santos' mother and siblings often hold court. "It's definitely a family affair," he said.
