Café Eugene Closing, Cantina Del Sol Opening in Its Place

It's goodbye, Northwest and hello, Southwest at 1175 Solano Ave. in Albany.

Café Eugene, which opened in early 2016 (and which is depicted above) and served Pacific Northwestern cuisine on Solano Avenue in Albany, is closing on the last night of 2017.

Set to open in its place in January will be Cantina Del Sol, a new full-service Mexican restaurant with a full bar, specializing in signature margaritas and casual, family-style meals.

Owner Jon Guhl of the 1100 Group is a co-founder of The Star and Little Star Pizza, which is located on this same block. Guhl grew up in the American Southwest and want to bring that region's cantina-style flavors to lower Solano. Cantina Del Sol's culinary director, Chris Laramie, spent two years as executive chef at Hog Island Oyster Co. in San Francisco, before which — with his wife Veronica — he co-owned Berkeley's popular Peruvian restaurant eVe.

Cantina Del Sol's executive chef Luis Rodriguez served as executive chef at Picante in Berkeley for eight years.
