Richmond-based East Brother Beer Co. has won a silver medal last month at the 33rd Great American Beer Festival, the nation's largest and — suds-lovers say — fiercest beer contest.

East Brother's Czech pale lager-style Pilsner was selected from a field of some 10,000 brews submitted by 2,300 brewers based all over the USA.

This same brew — nicknamed "Bo Pils" — won a shimmering gold medal at the California Craft Brewers Cup in September.

The CCBA included 1,266 entries from 194 independent craft breweries statewide.

“We’re really excited for our regulars and the bars that support us," said Rob Lightner, who co-founded East Brother Beer Co. in Richmond with his friend and business partner Chris Coomber three years ago.

"These folks vote for Bo Pils over and over again with their hard-earned dollars," Lightner said. "They knew it was an outstanding beer all along. This is great confirmation for them – and for us!”

Other East Bay breweries won medals in the CCBC, too. San Leandro-based Drake's Brewing Co. scored silver for its Aroma Coma rye IPA and for its Santa's Brass barleywine beer.

Alameda-based Faction Brewing Company won silver for its Defcon 1 Trappist quadrupel. And Berkeley-based Triple Rock won silver for its Cleverpenny Scottish export ale and bronze for its Bid Adieu Belgian-style ale.
