East Brother Debuts Pre-Prohibition Lager

It evokes pre-1920 American ingredients and flavors.

The second release in Richmond-based East Brother Beer Company's seasonal lager series pays homage to history.

Pre-Prohibition Lager ventures back to the early 20th century, made according to a style that was favored by German immigrant brewers who brought their processes and yeast to America, then adapted these to work with native hops and malt.

"Pre-Pro Lagers," as they're nicknamed, are known as the forebears of today's big beer lagers, but richer and hoppier.

East Brother's Pre-Prohibition Lager entails Cluster hops, a bit of corn and barley flavor, and 5.5 percent ABV. Its ingredients are based on what was readily available and native in the US at the turn of the 20th century — including six-row barley, which grew well in the Great Plains; and Cluster, a very old American hops that was immensely popular a century ago.

The old-but-new brew is now available at East Brother's taproom and on draft and in cans at the brewery's retail partners.
