Eater Awards Honor East Bayites

A Fruitvale favorite was named the Bay Area's best restaurant.

Anneli Star Josselin Rufus has just announced the winners of its ninth annual Eater Awards.

Meant to spotlight the best chefs, bars, pop-ups, restaurants, and other dining standouts in 24 cities on two continents, the winners — of course — include at least one East Bay mover-and-shaker.

Among the national awards, spanning the whole USA, Chef of the Year is UC Berkeley and Chez Panisse alum Samin Nosrat, star of the celebrated Netflix documentary — named after her book — Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat.

The national Breakout Star of the Year is Oakland's own chef-restaurateur Nite Yun, whose Nyum Bai restaurant opened in Fruitvale this February "and quickly snapped up nearly every restaurant-world accolade possible," explains Eater, lauding its "flavorful insight into the golden era of Cambodia."

"Nyum Bai appeared on national best-of lists, including Eater’s best new restaurants list and Bon Appétit’s Hot 10, and Yun was named an Eater Young Gun," Eater reports.

Nyum Bai scooped the localized award for San Francisco Restaurant of the Year.
