Flora Launches a New Eating/Drinking/Book Club

Meals and cocktails will be designed around each author and book.

Uptown Oakland's Flora Restaurant and Bar is launching a new book-club series on May 15, spotlighting works of literature beloved by members of the Flora team.

Helming the first meeting in the series will be executive chef Rebecca Boice, who has chosen to celebrate selected works from The Portable Dorothy Parker

Attendees will first meet at art-deco bar Fauna from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to enjoy a cocktail called the Dorothy Parker Special — made with scotch, Amaro Abano, Benedictine, bitters, and kumquat.

Then the fun continues with a Parker-inspired dinner at Flora whose courses include popovers with celery & ham; gem salad with asparagus and pimiento dressing; Sirloin Steak ala Dorothy Parker (a small, thick, juicy sirloin steak with tomatoes, mushrooms, squash, and butter); and chocolate-cream eclairs.

Tickets for the event are $55 per person.

Optional wine pairings or gin and scotch highball pairings are also available for $25.

Books to be featured at future club meetings include Carter Beats the Devil, by former East Bay Express writer Glen David Gold (June); The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (July); There There by Tommy Orange (August); and Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion (September).
