At Eat Drink SF last weekend, we learned that avant-garde ice creamery Humphry Slocombe -- creators of such outrageous flavors as Jalapeño Cornbread, White Miso, and Balsamic Caramel -- now has an Oakland location in Uptown's The Hive. Amidst hundreds of other sweets and savories being sampled at the annual mega-food-fest, HS's Malted Milk Chocolate was a show-stoppingly satiny masterpiece.
Also at the three-day culinary extravaganza, staged at San Francisco's Fort Mason by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, we met the folks from Emeryville-based "super-herb" drinkmakers REBBL, who use adaptogenic plants such as ashwaganda, maca, and reishi in a soy-free, dairy-free, grain-free, GMO-free, organic range of plant-based pumpkin-protein elixirs and other drinks in flavors such as Matcha Latte, Ashwaganda Spicy Chai, Turmeric Golden-Milk, and Turmeric Lemon Tart. Every bottle of REBBL purchased directly aids the efforts of anti-human-trafficking nonprofit Not For Sale.
East Bay icons and newcomers shone brightly at the well-attended fest. Award-winning family-owned Oakland coffee roastery Mr. Espresso was serving smooth affogatos.
Berkeley-based Trumer Pils -- one of the fest's sponsors -- was pouring its golden glories into sleek souvenir glasses.
Among hundreds of other edible adventures served by Bay Area chefs over the weekend were shiso-plum madeleines from Shades of Sugar Bakeshop, bacon-wrapped shu mai from Crystal Jade, Don Julio 1942 Añejo Tequila, lobster gazpacho from Le Colonial, steak tartare from Epic Steak House, seafood ceviche with charred habanero vinaigrette from Absinthe, and vodka-corn vanilla milkshakes and aquavit-cherry root-beer floats from Bi-Rite.
And the Meritage at the Claremont was serving meaty treats.
"Unlike other festivals, we don't need to fly in the talent from all over the country," GGRA executive director Gwyneth Borden told us. "In the Bay Area, the talent is already right here."
