Catch Some Ethereal Oddity

Ambient music project stirs nostalgia.

Tycho brings ethereal sounds to the Fox on Jan. 7.

San Francisco’s ambient band Tycho combines electro-synth and traditional instruments into haunting nursery gothic melodies and mysterious chillwave that might evoke nostalgia for a long-forgotten childhood or a deep sense of saudade for a home that you never knew.

Tycho’s music creates a mind-tickling, ear-itching vibe of ethereal weirdness grounded by snippets of found audio from old weather broadcasts to overheard telephone conversations, so it’s no wonder that Tycho was tapped to record tracks for the similarly weird Adult Swim music compilation Ghostly Swim.

More recently, the band continued its ambient wave ascent with Epoch. Like the soundtrack to a science fiction film that plays only in your head, Epoch combines the off-kilter aesthetics of an ’80s Celtic new wave, invoking the spirit of bagpipes, fiddles, and wind-swept moors, with the smooth quasi-Datarock muzak of a corporate training video. Remember a past you never knew you forgot when the band brings this unique sound to the Fox Theater in January.

Jan. 7, 8 p.m., $54-$66. Fox Theater, 1807 Telegraph Ave, Oakland.
