Kuli Kuli Launches at Walmart

The Oakland-based superfood-snack company is growing fast.

Oakland-based Kuli Kuli, a mission-driven company pioneering the superfood known as moringa via energy bars, smoothie mixes, powders, and other items, has just announced that it is launching into 2,500 Walmart stores. 

Hailed as being more nutritious than kale and currently growing faster in the food industry than matcha, moringa leaves have long been used in Ayurvedic medicine. Recent studies have spotlighted the leaves' anti-inflammatory and intioxidant properties. According to the food-industry market-research firm Datassential, moringa has grown 300 percent in this industry over the last four years.

Founder and CEO Lisa Curtis was inspired to create Kuli Kuli while serving in the Peace Corps. 

Having been the first brand in the US to pioneer moringa, five-year-old Kuli Kuli sustainably sources its leaves from 2,438 small farmers, mainly on the African continent. 

One of these is the Asante Mama Moringa farm in Uganda, depicted above. 

Kuli Kuli was recently listed on Inc’s 5000 Fastest Growing Companies as the fifteenth in its list of Top Food & Beverage Companies and in the top 10 percent of overall companies ranked. The company recently closed a $6.34 million Series B, led by Griffith Foods and Kellogg’s eighteen94 capital.

As part of its founding mission to fight world hunger, for every Kuli Kuli moringa product sold in Walmart from now through Nov. 19, Kuli Kuli will donate a moringa product to a Feeding America food bank.
