La Marcha Owners Launching New Restaurant

Alcalá is set to open in Montclair next year.

Chefs Sergo Monleón and Emily Sarlatte, owners of Berkeley tapas bar La Marcha, are preparing to launch an upscale new restaurant next year in Montclair.

Alcalá — whose name derives from an Arabic word meaning "the citadel," a reference reflected in the new restaurant's decor — will be located on Mountain Boulevard and offer 62 seats plus a ten-seat bar.

It will serve traditional Spanish cuisine such as paella and grilled meats. With an emphasis on using the whole animal, Alcalá will also serve house-made charcuterie, tapas, and seafood entrées.

Monleón and Sarlatte have tapped Chef Raiden Brenner to be Alcalá's executive chef.

Brenner's background includes cheesemaking with Charles Cascio, live fire cooking at Oliveto in Oakland, fermenting at Cultured Pickle Group, and whole-animal butchery at Revival in Berkeley — as well as opening Uptown's Duende and the Dock.
