Lucia's Launches a Pizza Truck
You can see it at the Grand Lake Farmers' Market.
Lucia's Pizzeria in downtown Berkeley has just debuted its first-ever pizza truck.
"I'm very excited" about the old-but-brand-new truck, announced Steve Dumain, who with his fellow Lucia's co-owner Alessandro Uccelli designed this handy, adorable, multipurpose vehicle which will now bake ten-inch thin-crusted, Neapolitan-style pizza pies at Oakland's Grand Lake Farmers' Market on Saturdays.
Plans are also being finalized for regular stints at Berkeley's Fieldwork Brewing and at private events.
The three-wheeled 1981 Ape Piaggio — hailed in Italian pop culture and small-town memories as a classic vintage utility and delivery vehicle — was reconstructed and built in Naples, then remodeled to hold a prettily tiled, wood-fired brick oven that can reach 900 degrees.
For its launch, the truck will serve several of Lucia's popular pies, including the Lips of Fire (sopressata and ghost-pepper-infused maple syrup), the Pepe L'Pig (local sausage and pepperoncini), the Shroomy (sautéed mixed mushrooms and cheese), and both a classic Margherita and a vegan Margherita.
Gluten-free dough will also be available in limited quantities on the truck, as will vegan cashew cheese; Dumain himself has celiac disease and prioritized adding a high-quality gluten-free pizza to the restaurant's menu.
