After a white Tahoe weekend in 2005, three skiers lamented a lack of eco-gourmet fast-casual restaurants that could sate their slope-honed appetites for healthy, sustainable fare.
Specializing in resplendent salads, sandwiches, and customizable bowls, MIXT Greens now sports nine locations in San Francisco, two in Los Angeles, and — new this year — one in Uptown.
“Oakland is the heart of the Bay Area’s culinary scene, and it’s where so many of our San Francisco fans live — so it’s a place we have aspired to be for many years,” said MIXT CEO Leslie Silverglide, who co-founded the group with her husband, David Silverglide, and her brother, Andrew Swallow, who is a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef.
The Oakland opening was a MIXT milestone as it was there that the group exclusively launched a special menu for kids.
It “was part of a longtime goal to make it as easy as possible for families to share a healthy, delicious meal together at MIXT,” Silverglide explained.
“As a parent, I know how much I appreciate the chance to grab a salad, enjoy a beer, and introduce my kids to all the tasty ways that veggies can be prepared. Also unique to Oakland is our organic kombucha, craft brews, local wines on tap, and seasonal plates” featuring hot-off-the-grill lean proteins, chef-crafted sauces including chimichurri, chicken jus, spicy Korean barbecue, and miso-ginger, “and perfectly cooked seasonal sides like cauliflower mash.”
MIXT’s bowls can be assembled from an array of about 100 options — ranging from roasted sunchokes to red rice to flatiron steak to Oakland-made Hodo Soy tofu.
“We started in 2005, when salads were still thought of as an appetizer, and since then, we’ve seen an explosion of customer demand for what we are doing: real food, sourced responsibly with a casual vibe,” Silverglide said.
“Since day one, MIXT has always stood for making you feel good with real food that is hearty and tastes delicious.”
“My brother applied techniques learned in fine dining to elevate salads to a whole new level,” she said.
“We continue this tradition today by daring our customers to try surprising combinations like fresh pomegranate with a North African berbere dressing.”
A San Ramon MIXT is set to open this spring.
