Oakland-based NickelDime Cocktail Syrups recently debuted three new flavor-combinations: Fairy Dust, Cherry Bomb, and Crimson Smoke.
They expand the local company's line quadruplefold, joining NickelDime's original syrup: ghost-peppery, cardamommy Caged Heat, which was launched last year.
Local absinthe crafter J. Absinthia Vermut and award-winning Sidebar mixologist Jared Hirsch launched NickelDime a few years ago thanks to a Kickstarter campaign which was 100 percent funded within seven days. Its name is a nod to the 510 area code.
Vermut shared samples of the new syrups at this month's Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. Especially sumptuous was the smooth, complex Crimson Smoke, made with cranberries, honey, and lapsang souchong tea.
While NickelDime's original syrup, Caged Heat, packs a capsicummy punch, the new syrups explore other rich, adventurous flavor avenues.
"We didn't want to just be known as the 'spicy-hot syrup' company," Vermut explained.
Fairy Dust is made with fennel, anise, and wormwood. Cherry Bomb is made with bittersweet cacao, tart cherries, and dark-roasted coffee.
Cocktails featuring NickelDime syrups have scooped awards in many competitions, including the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Four Roses Bourbon Charity Cocktail Challenge, the SIP Awards, and more.
