Oakland Magazine and Alameda Magazine are distinct editions of one single publication. Oakland Magazine is essential reading for keeping up with one of America’s most engaging and underappreciated cities. Alameda Magazine is the most authoritative guide to the island’s wonderful quality of life. Our combined circulation in Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda is larger than that of any other city magazine. For more than a decade, we have targeted an audience of highly desirable consumers through a variety of print and online channels. From comprehensive coverage of the trend-setting local food scene to thorough reporting about local retail and real estate, both magazines chronicle the forces reshaping the East Bay. And our newly reinvigorated culture and news coverage documents the latest trends in arts, development, and politics.
The East Bay Monthly, meanwhile, targets more upscale East Bay households than any other publication—with a circulation of 62,000, reaching more than 150,000 readers. Our formula is sophisticated yet straightforward. Readers get eclectic, fascinating editorial and an attractive, useful catalog of the best local shops and services—delivered free to their doors every month. Since 1970 we’ve offered our advertisers effective, targeted, saturation marketing at a fraction of the cost of direct mail. The Monthly has more repeat advertisers than any other local publication, and our advertisers tell us we generate the best response, dollar for dollar.
Telegraph Media, publisher of Oakland Magazine and Alameda Magazine and The East Bay Monthly, is in the market for great freelance writers and reporters to contribute to our magazines.
Ideal contributors are based in the East Bay and know the area’s diversions, people, issues and dynamics. It’s also important to be familiar with our magazines. We’re looking for good generalists as well as contributors who want to report on and write news and politics, lifestyle issues, food and drink, and arts and culture. Pay is commensurate with complexity of subject matter per assignment.
Freelancers must have magazine writing or comparable experience and know AP style. Journalism degree preferred.
Send a cover letter, resume, a writing sample and a story idea to Judy@AlamedaMagazine.com, Judy@OaklandMagazine.com, or Judy@TheMonthly.com. Please write “Freelance Writer” in your e-mail subject line. Material may be mailed to 1305 Franklin St., Suite 501, Oakland, CA 94612.

BEFORE YOU PITCH any ideas, however, familiarize yourself with our magazines, which includes general understanding of what we actually cover. Upon receipt of a query that may interest the editor, clips and writing samples will be requested as evidence of the writer’s ability to complete the proposed assignment. Those should be sent via e-mail as attachments.
