The long-gone, scruffy Home Cafe wouldn’t recognize the spiffy decor, higher tariffs and upscale dishes with cute names like LadyBoy (Asian fusion salad with lemongrass–kaffir lime prawns), Miss Piggy & the General (pulled pork sandwich), Sorry Charlie (coriander-crusted tuna steak sandwich), I’m not Belgian (buttermilk waffle) and Time-Life Cookbook (Emmental cheese omelet soufflé). But it all—including service that vacillates between friendly and terse—comes with the gentrifying southwest Berkeley neighborhood. The Grayson burger, with Nueske double-smoked bacon, white cheddar, shoestring onions and house-made barbecue sauce, is deservedly famous, but the largely organic and local menu includes pastas and other TV Dinners, er, main dishes. You know you’re in a new gourmet ghetto when your server grinds fresh black pepper on your Tom Boy (delicious corned beef hash made with potatoes, parsnips and apple, topped with two perfectly poached eggs) and you can substitute seitan for the spicy buttermilk-fried chicken paillard with the waffle and cream gravy. Breakfast and lunch Mon.–Fri., brunch Sat. (Reservations 6 or more.)
