Essential Information
2142 Center St.
Berkeley, CA 510-848-8877 Upon entering this well-appointed space only steps from the Cal campus, you’ll feel transported across the Caspian Sea to the Alborz Mountains of Iran. White tablecloths, rich maroon walls, cozy exposed brick and refined service add an upscale feel, as do the exotic names of the appetizers and house specials. Flamenco music and glasses of Pinot Noir and Viognier brought a festive element that enhanced the excitement of exploring Persian cuisine. The combination platter introduced us to kashk bodemjan, kookoo sabzi and mast-o-khiar plus unbelievably fresh feta and herb-rich dolma. Shishkebobs of filet mignon, bell peppers and tomatoes were flavorful, but the more memorable dish was the baghali polo with lamb shank and basmati rice: The lamb was fall-from-the-bone tender and juicy, the plump basmati rice bursting with lima beans and fresh dill surprises. For a taste of Persian delicacies, Alborz is worth trying. Lunch and dinner daily. Additional InformationArea: Berkeley Price: $$
