The din at B gives the industrial-sleek and stylish Old Oakland restaurant an energetic vibe, one that’s carried over to the menu of B’s latest chef, David Seawell. His spring menu beckons with bacon-roasted quail, cider-brined Niman ranch pork chops and rack of lamb and well-thought wood-fired pizzas. But interesting starters moved us on a busy Saturday night (one that could easily accommodate a walk-in): brick-oven mussels under shaved fennel in a broth of Pernod; a warm mushroom salad of king trumpets abed fava leaves and arugula; crisp sugar snap peas; a vinaigrette-dressed French bean salad with warm (not very) goat cheese; and truffled fries. Sadly, two artichoke dishes were off limits, as the kitchen ran short of artichokes; similar poor planning carried through on dessert—when we ordered the dark chocolate–olive oil mousse that had turned our heads, the waitress returned minutes later empty handed to inform us there was no more. Just means we’ll have to make another trip. Lunch Tue.–Fri., dinner Tue.–Sat.
