The authentic taste of the Iberian Peninsula arrives in Temescal via Catalan-born chef Daniel Olivella, putting Barlata on the East Bay map as the most genuine of local tapas joints. A blackboard lists the small-plate delights—dominated by seafood such as bonito tuna, anchovies, sardines, squid, octopus, clams, scallops and shrimp with a healthy mix of cured meats, chorizo, sausage, rabbit and vegetable concoctions thrown in—which, at $5 to $14 apiece, seem downright recession friendly. Assorted pinchos at the bar, an all-Spanish wine list (cava and sherry, too), memorable postre and affordable digestifs complete the experience, enhanced also by red walls and the décor of a kick scooter, pop-art paintings of tin can goods (or latas, which on occasion do duty as serving dishes) and an enormous paella pan. Serves dinner daily, lunch Wed.–Fri. and weekend brunch.
