Blue Dot Cafe and Coffee Bar

Essential Information
1910 Encinal Ave
Alameda, CA
510-523-2583
Chestnut Station has a kid-friendly gathering place and coffee shop with an eco-conscious bent. Owners James (an Aussie) and Megan Hume (a Kansas transplant) culled the name from the 1990s description of Earth, photographed by Voyager I, as a pale blue dot. They say they want to do their part to preserve their home by serving good organic products and fair-trade coffee (in biodegradable cornstarch containers) in a comfy setting. They’re hitting the mark: The coffee, from espresso to the drip, is outstanding; pastries and sweet treats, including the raspberry friand, are worthy; and the salads (try the Blue Dot: butter lettuce with sliced apples, walnuts, radishes and yummy blue cheese dressing) and sandwiches are nourishing. High ceilings, pine floors, a kids’ nook, Johnny Cash tunes playing, local art on the walls and free Wi-Fi make for a pleasant vibe. Serves breakfast and lunch daily.
