What’s not to love about this place, a splash sensation at Oakland’s Eat Real Festival? First, it’s comfortable and friendly, warmed up by the back wall of plank paneling and similarly styled picnic tables by Jeffrey Ruiz, a woodworker extraordinaire who uses reclaimed materials. And the roll-up door, comfy sidewalk perch, black banquettes and roomy bar add an inviting air. But the deal-sealer is the food, from the house-marinated Picholine olives and housemade seasonal pickles to the pork ribs and tri-tip steak, not to mention the delightful bar snacks, starters and sides (don’t miss the chimichurri Jo-Jos, true Northwest comfort food). Meat is really the thing here, which is why carnivores can order ham, charcuterie, burgers and sausage, though Chop Bar doesn’t forget the fruits of the sea. A few more things to love: good coffee all the time; California (mostly) wine by the glass or half carafe as well as by the bottle; a nice beer selection by the bottle plus local drafts; and daily agua fresca. Serves light breakfast weekdays, brunch on weekends, lunch Mon.–Fri. and dinner nightly. (Reservations 6 or more.)
