On weekends there is usually a wait to get into this Old Oakland eatery, and for good reason. Large portions, an inventive menu, patio seating and a cheerful staff make the Cock-a-Doodle something to crow about. Fresh ingredients combine with such choices as applewood-smoked bacon or ham and graham cracker–crusted French toast to push the menu beyond the ordinary. For a special treat, try Blanca’s fried-egg sandwich with applewood-smoked bacon and chipotle aioli or one of the specialized omelets (the sautéed garlic shrimp version is delicious). Lunch options range all the way from hamburgers to grilled ahi tuna salad or lemongrass salmon fillet. Worth the wait. Breakfast and lunch daily, special Cuban dinner Thu.–Sat.
