Pappo’s John Thiel scores with this gourmet carryout gem in the Alameda Marketplace that turns takeaway meals into something special. Thiel incorporates fresh, local and sustainable ingredients (from the Alameda Natural Grocery, the Alameda Point Collaborative Community Garden and Berkeley’s Metropolis Bakery) in his seasonally changing menu that offers sandwiches, panini, burgers, dogs, rotisserie items and deli sides such as pasta salads and coleslaw. The prosciutto, goat cheese and arugula panino was perfectly toasted with exact grill marks, and the Ripper Dog—a fried Niman Ranch hot dog hidden under ample sweet relish all tucked into a crunchy baquette—rocked. The fried onions rings were light and crispy and stole the show, so we didn’t mind much that the counter guy forgot to order them until our sandwiches were served. Pop in for impressive repast when there’s no time for cooking. Serves lunch and (early) dinner daily.
