Scrumptious food and generous portions make this carb-lover’s paradise a real winner for breakfast. Don’t be put off by the red flannel hash’s bright pink hue; the earthy combination of beets, potatoes, bacon and onions is outstanding—crispy on the outside and served with perfectly poached eggs. The Mexican scramble and huevos rancheros arrive with black beans and enough tortillas to mop up the plate afterwards. Addictive, savory cornmeal pancakes come with plenty of soft butter and real maple syrup; sage biscuits are flaky and tender; homemade coffee cake and muffins do not disappoint. The service is friendly; the coffee is strong. The poker-themed décor is leftover ’60s kitsch, with burlap potato sacks and pictures of W.C. Fields on the walls and sagging but comfy red-vinyl booths with Formica tabletops. At lunch try the tuna melt or the Portobello mushroom burger. Breakfast and lunch Tue.–Sun.
