“Gourmet to go” describes Grégoire in a nutshell. But this takeout is ultra special, turning seasonal and locally grown ingredients into gastronomical goodies unavailable elsewhere. Chef/owner Grégoire Jacquet changes the menu on the first day of every month, making each dish from scratch. The newest outpost on Piedmont Avenue accommodates only about half a dozen people, so carryout is the norm; it’s also a cinch, because the food comes in playful but functional octagonal cardboard boxes lined with black-and-white checked paper. At lunch, we nabbed an outdoor table and happily crunched toasted dark rye topped with smoked salmon and chive cream; nibbled on crispy potato puffs (light, savory doughnuts of a sort); dug into a salad of hearts of romaine spiked with Point Reyes blue cheese and toasted walnuts; and watched a world of shoppers go by. Dinner strays from the decidedly gourmet sandwiches at lunchtime, turning out the likes of (in July) sautéed Mexican bay scallops, pastry-wrapped chicken breast with Gruyère and prosciutto, and grilled pork tenderloin. Lunch and dinner daily. (Also: 2109 Cedar St., Berkeley, 510-883-1893).
