Essential Information
2300 Webster St.
Oakland, CA
510-832-8896
Celebrity-chef James Syhabout of Michelin-starred Commis fame brings the affordable Thai street food of his youth to a corner storefront two blocks away from the Luka's-Ozumo-Picán-Plum-Bakesale Betty hub of Uptown feasting at Broadway and Grand. At a time when the food truck phenomenon has gone viral and ethnic street eats are the new tapas, Hawker Fare gets smart with street food with rice bowl dishes aplenty — pork belly, lemongrass chicken, Issan sausage, kao mun gai and kao plak — as well as larb, mussels, tiger shrimp, short ribs and a handful of other delicious offerings. Most items are under $10 and represent Syhabout's return to roots — the street food of Thailand, where he was born, and the homey feel of Oakland, where he grew up. Each bite inspires a bit of wonder, but differently than at Commis. There you taste the genius; at Hawker Fare, you taste the soul — and hear the song — behind the smarts. Serves lunch Mon.–Fri., dinner Tue.–Sat.
