The suggestion of Greek food often translates to “let’s get gyros.” But the enticing menu of this newcomer invites hungry patrons to think outside the gyros. While the usual specialties — gyros, spanakopita mezes (spinach pie) and Greek salad — are all a sure bet for a delicious meal at this friendly restaurant, a visit here is the perfect time to branch out, starting with the taramosalata (caviar spread, $6) or saganaki (Greek kefalotiri cheese, $8). Among the main dishes not to be missed is gyemisti piperia, (stuffed pepper, $10.50) served with oven-baked potatoes in a tomato sauce, and the gyouvetsi meh arni (orzo with lamb shanks, $16.50). Top it off with an order of rizogallo (rice pudding, $3.75) for a delectable finish. Take-out is available, but with the bustling open kitchen, ocean-blue tiles and pictures of the island of Ikaria, Greece, from where the recipes are derived, Ikaros presents a wonderful dine-in atmosphere to match an outstanding meal. Open daily.
