If you go here for lunch on a weekday, chances are you’ll see somebody you know — or you’ll see the kids of somebody you know. Kai’s is a neat, modern Japanese sushi house on Park Street that does a bang-up business with the Alameda High set, catering to the lunch crowd with lightening quick, inexpensive specials (and something called “tempura onion rings”). But this tidy place — where bamboo-like wainscoting accents brown-hued décor and Japanese lantern-esque pendant lights co-exist with lucky cats, neon signs, kimonos and Japanese prints — is a solid performer for the adult crowd, too. Sashimi, nigiri sushi, maki, donburi, udon, teriyaki and tempura in many iterations are on offer. Not sure what’s what? Don’t worry, as there are plenty of photographs with clear descriptions on the menu. Take it from us: Go with the rolls. Our spider roll, for example, included still-hot, crunchy, soft-shell crab nestled next to cool cucumber, creamy avocado and a sweet sauce and exhibited toothsome integrity when bitten into. Hot tea, miso and steaming, salted edamame took the chill off a wintry day. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
