When you’re not in the mood to brave the crowds at Sushi House, Katsu provides an excellent alternative on Alameda’s West End. The wakame (seaweed) salad sparkles, and the sashimi and hand-cut rolls are ultra-fresh. Non-fish eaters will enjoy the not-too-greasy tempura or the grilled chicken teriyaki. Bento boxes provide a mountain of food with a choice of two or three items plus miso soup, rice and green salad. Service here is quick and very friendly. With its black walls and thick bamboo pillars, the decor is pleasing, and it’s quiet enough that you don’t have to strain to hear your date from across the table. At the bar you can watch ESPN on the big flat-screen TV. Lunch Mon.–Sat., dinner daily.
