Essential Information

1635 Park St.
Alameda, CA

510-522-8200

Convenience (open until 1 a.m. daily), congeniality (young, cheerful, fluently bilingual Thai servers) and variety (more than 55 items, plus meat/seafood/tofu variations) lend out-of-the ordinary appeal to this Alameda branch of what an outdoor banner declares is “the best noodle house in San Francisco.” Much else about this small, plain, tidy fishbowl of a storefront is standard: The pad kee mao (“drunken noodles”) boasted more spicy heat than subtle flavor, and a super-hot wok slightly scorched the tofu, bias-cut green beans, bell peppers, carrot slices and brown mushrooms; the chicken in the kao gra pow (known elsewhere as gai pad gra pow) was minced, as it should be, and held more complex and satisfying flavors. The big menu’s range of curries, noodle soups, rice dishes are a boon for budget-minded diners, especially those looking for late-night drop-in and to-go choices. Lunch and dinner daily.
