Chef Joey Altman lent his celebrity and innovative Afro-Caribbean culinary legacy to this stylish revival of his funkier original early ’90s S.F. hotspot, and executive chef Robert Barker ran with the small plates concept, crafting an expansive menu of raw, baked and fried seafood; jerk chicken, pork and whole fish; catfish and Cuban sandwiches; soups, chowders and salads; and satisfying brunch specials. Spiciness rules in sauces, marinades, chutneys and more, with chile, garlic, ginger, lime, mint sparking tropical fruit flavors of mango, pineapple and coconut. Cute menu names (“mini skirts with nice buns” for steak sliders, “Thai sticks” for the terrific spring rolls) aside, camp elements do not dominate the upscale Island décor. Start your mini dining holiday with one of the scores of sophisticated and whimsical rum cocktails and a plate of super thin and crisp sweet potato fries and finish with a luscious slice of milk-soaked tres leches cake. Breakfast Mon.–Fri., lunch Mon.–Fri., brunch Sat.-Sun., dinner nightly.
