Japanese esthetics meet American fusion in Jeremy Umland’s drop-dead gorgeous Uptown eatery, an offshoot of his original San Francisco establishment. Prices keep full dinners the prefecture of the affluent. But the tilt toward izakaya (Japanese tapas, more or less) makes it possible for budget-conscious diners to drink and nosh without breaking the bank. Gyoza (pot stickers), kappa maki (cucumber sushi roll) and tempura yasai (assorted vegetables) are high quality, but don’t miss the charcoal-grilled vegetables and robata skewers. We felt our money was well spent on imo (roasted sweet potato), tsukune (subtly spiced chicken-pork meatballs) and buta (succulent Kurobuta pork belly with spicy miso). Two-piece orders of nigiri sushi, routine starters and the simplest sushi rolls will put you in double-digit territory. But every Ozumo dish — hanabi, slow-braised short ribs and plump seared scallops plus the “signature dishes” that should ring any omnivore’s bell — pays off. The desserts we tried dazzled the eye and surprised the palate. For us, it all was most delicious (oishii). Serves lunch Mon.–Fri., dinner nightly.
