One of Oakland’s hottest restaurants, thanks to wood-fired-pizza guru Charlie Hallowell, maintains its popularity with food from an ever-changing seasonal menu served up in digs reminiscent of the old hardware store once located there. Unbelievably, we slipped in without waiting on a Wednesday just before 7 p.m. and minutes in advance of the huge crush, which was subsequently steered toward exterior benches. Pizzaiolo now accepts reservations but this food is worth waiting for: heirloom tomatoes and avocado toasts, wild rocket and frisee, fried Hoffman Farms chicken and clam pizza. The educated waitstaff enhances the experience. Dinner Mon.–Sat.
