Daniel Patterson of two Michelin-starred Coi fame sets up camp in Oakland with Plum, the newest plum in the East Bay dining scene. And gastronomes have noticed, even though Patterson isn’t trying to re-create Coi. Instead, he has captured a neighborhood tavern vibe, albeit upscale and innovative, with precise, artful, experimental and deliberately fashioned cuisine. The menu includes “snacks,” “to start,” “vegetables and grains,” “animal,” “cheese” and “sweet,” but prices are reasonable, from $4 to $18 or $19 per dish. Although Patterson’s unusual combinations will not be for everyone, we were blown away by the surprises that slowly and steadily unfolded on the tongue. The changing menu delighted us with the likes of chickpea fritters, burnt-onion fig leather, potato “chicharrones,” artichoke terrine, lamb stew, sliced roasted pork, a spicy squash puree and a pork trotter burger. It’s big news that we’ve got a chef of Patterson’s skill and repute in our midst. It’s even more significant that Patterson gets Oakland. Serves lunch Mon.–Fri. and dinner daily.
