Amy Murray brings an attention-grabbing concept to Berkeley’s arts and theater district: organic urban renewal, which is really more of her global-yet-homey take on seasonal Cal cuisine. At the heart of her enterprise is her notion of revival. She is resurrecting dishes and cooking techniques from our grandparents’
and great-grandparents’ kitchens, so old-school kitchen practices (pickling, caramelizing, braising, smoking) and house-made garnishes (chutneys, aiolis, pestos, relishes, mustards) put an explicit pre-industrial-food-production spin on the contemporary locavore and snout-to-tail trends appearing on the plates. The mixed pig plate — falling-apart pulled shoulder, succulent belly confit, beautifully textured sausage and tender, juicy loin — was truly delicious. And should the goat appear on the daily-changing menu in the form of chops, meatballs, a sandwich, small plate or braised, don’t miss it. The creative cocktail list and the well-selected international wine list add to Revival’s appeal. This outlet is likely to become a cornerstone of the Berkeley arts district, a hot spot for shoppers and patrons of the Berkeley Rep and Aurora theaters, the Jazz School, the Freight & Salvage and Shattuck area cinemas. Serves lunch Tue.–Fri., dinner Tue.–Sun.
