Remember that seafood restaurant you grew up going to with your parents? It could very well have been Spenger’s, the Berkeley stalwart where the fare runs reassuringly familiar. There’s nothing too adventurous here, where dependability and predictability are trade values. Seafood lovers can count on a wide selection of daily-changing fresh-fish options, and customers rarely tire of the grand old bar, odd antiquities and nooks and crannies that define Spenger’s sprawling complex. Our Parmesan-encrusted petrale sole arrived neatly presented, and the Dungeness crab, our first of the season, was sufficiently succulent. A bowl of the hearty, stick-to-your-ribs clam chowder makes for a great bargain lunch. Lunch and dinner daily.
