Essential Information

Oakland, CA

Spice Monkey Café, a sweet and original addition to downtown, is making a name for itself with the cutest logo ever (a Curious George–like monkey) and an individual spirit to match. The digs—former home to Sabina, an Indian restaurant—are mosaic-tiled with a peacefully gurgling fountain and a massive Artisan Burlwood Furniture Company bar. The menu plates appetizers, soups, salads and major entrees with, according to the lore, “everything prepared from scratch with love!” Don’t miss the yummy pulled-pork sandwich, the braised pork shoulder atop a delicious seasonal vegetable ragout or the towering and piping hot chicken pot pie. This food, from the empanadas to the monkey fries, does indeed feel like it’s prepared with care and attention, and the homey vibe, with a tint of edge, makes dining a pleasure. Lunch and dinner Mon.–Sat.
