The red-and-white sign proclaims that The Smokehouse has been serving Berkeley since 1951, and old timers do know this drive-in joint, which efficiently turns out big, messy “charbroiled” hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers and chili without frills. Heaping piles of fries and shakes and malts in every flavor—from vanilla, chocolate and caramel to boysenberry, cherry and root beer—keep customers coming back. People-watchers will be rewarded with an odd array of customers, from construction workers and pops pushing baby strollers to fashionistas with cell phones glued to their ears and hip-hopsters showing off their saggy-baggy pants and puffy coats. Lunch and dinner daily.
