When Wendy Brucker and Roscoe Skipper finally branched out from their exquisite Solano Avenue restaurant Rivoli, they didn’t try to recreate that Berkeley institution’s upscale ambience, but rather opted for Florentine-inspired small-plates-oriented fare and a casual, energetic vibe. With three to six choices of antipasti, primi, secondi, pizze, contorni and dolci, the Tuscan-based menu can be explored for months, mixing and matching, for instance, calamari and shrimp frito misto; mushroom pizza; romaine lettuce salad with anchovy-lemon vinaigrette; luscious gnocchi and large, hand-folded ravioli; grilled whole fish; a giant T-bone steak; Plugrá butter–drenched Hoffman chicken breast; and garlicky spinach or toothsome shelling beans in olive oil. Superb wine choices and such simple but intense desserts as gelato with house-made limoncello perfectly complement the hearty offerings—grace notes in a setting with as friendly a feel as you’ll find anywhere. Dinner daily.
