Essential Information
146 Grand Ave.
Oakland, CA

The guys behind Trueburger — Greg Eng and Jason Low, two former sous chefs at Bay Wolf Restaurant who cut their chops at other well-known SF and East Bay restaurants — have spawned their version of the modern day hamburger joint. Theirs is mostly hamburgers (duh), hot dogs, French fries and milk shakes (with awesome “mix-ins” ranging from toasted marshmallows to caramel sauce). But their menu mix also throws in chopped salads and root beer floats, and they do it all in a kicky, cunning storefront with a very clever Lake Merritt mural lining the main wall. The burgers are messy Angus beef things (they grind their own meat) on soft, toasted egg buns; they’re served medium with garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato to represent the chefs’ take on a classic burger. Want cheese? That’ll be American only. For $4.95, the Trueburger represents real value. Is it the best hamburger in town? Well, it’s damn good. The fries are about the best around. Serves lunch Mon.–Sat. and dinner Wed.–Sat.
