If you like neighborhoody cafes where you can sit outside on a sunny day or cozy up indoors in the rainy season, then Caffe 817 is just the place for you. It’s homey yet Euro-Italian vibe-exuding, starting many of its days as a bustling cafe and then ramping up into a hip, hurrying restaurant lunch spot before settling into a quieter coffeehouse rhythm as the day progresses. We stopped by on a sunny Sunday morning and took a quick peek at the lovely art, all for sale, displayed on the inside walls, but we chose an outside table where we enjoyed poached (well, technically, steamed) eggs, prosciutto, toast, and latte, a lovely, creamy creation served in an enormous saucered cup—the way every latte ought to come. Fellow patrons shared pastries, buttered deliciously crunchy bread, touted the seasonal fruit, and raved about the granola in yogurt as they sat back, as we did, and watched the neighborhood wake up. Lunchtime plates up sandwiches and panini (always starring great breads), soups, and salads, and consistently good, fresh coffee, thanks to Mr. Espresso, and nice tea from Far Leaves Tea. You can take bit of Caffe 817 home: Pick up homemade jam, granola, or chicken stock for your personal culinary explorations. Breakfast and lunch daily.
