Mmmm, mac’n’cheese. Who would've thunk a restaurant devoted to that old comfort food staple all kids grow up on—macaroni and cheese—would stand a chance in the California cuisine East Bay epicenter? But Homeroom is truly in a class by itself and gets gold stars and A-plus grades from hipsters and families alike. The brainchild of Allison Arevalo and Erin Wade, Homeroom (complete with library cards and a blackboard to indicate where their cheeses and beers come from) does rock-’em, sock-’em business with America’s favorite comfort food. In all, there are 10 varieties or so of mac’n’cheese, from the garlicky Gilroy to the velvety Vermont white cheddar. There’s even a vegan option, so celiacs take heart, and as of late, non-mac’n’cheese items (BLT and salads, for instance) are on offer. Two things: Add breadcrumbs to your mac’n’cheese and have your selection baked. The kids will love the Mason jars of limeade and root beer, and Homeroom earns high marks from adults for its carefully selected local beers and thoughtful choices of California wines by the glass or bottle. Save room for dessert: sea-salted homemade Oreos or peanut butter pie anybody? This is one classroom you’ll not want to leave. Serves lunch and dinner Tue.Sun.
