Take a trip to Greece, particularly to the isle of Ikaria, the supposed landing place of Icarus of Greek myth (who flew too close to the sun and melted his wax-and-leather wings), without leaving Oakland: have dinner at Ikaros. It’s a friendly and bustling Grand Lake restaurant with stylish sky-blue hues setting a comfortable Mediterranean tone for dining. Have a glass of retsina with melitzanes and saganaki for starters. Sample the flavorful lamb souvlakia, first un-sauced and then indulgently dipped into garlic-tanged tzatziki. Finally, inhale the scent of the aromatic chicken lemonato and dig in for a Grecian gastronomic treat. Something else that is nice here is that Ikaros spans the gamut, from familiar faves like gyros and spanakopita to more exotic speicalties. Serves lunch and dinner daily.
