An unassuming restaurant in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown, Sobo Ramen is a tasty neighborhood go-to, serving up big bowls of traditional Japanese noodles and delicious carafes of yogurt soju. Out front a string of twinkling lights beckons passersby while contemporary artwork lines the clean, white walls within. It’s a comfortably casual spot with a notably attentive staff where you can grab an appetizer of pan-fried snow crab and pork gyoza or a side of crowd-pleasing vegetable and shrimp tempura. Locals head in for tonkotsu ramen with mayu (pork bone broth with black garlic oil), which includes chashu (simmered pork belly), a soft-boiled egg, bean sprouts, green onion, and sesame seeds. Add fried garlic for an extra crunch. Soft-shell crab comes fried crispy with a citrusy dipping sauce and pairs extremely well with a cool Sapporo. Perhaps the karaage dish, a Japanese take on chicken nuggets marinated in soy sauce, could use a bit more flavor and a dash of love, but overall, it was a satisfying addition to our meal. Bottom line: Drop in before heading to the Fox or going back to the office, and you’re guaranteed to leave well-treated and well-fed. Lunch daily. Dinner Wed.–Sun.
